Talk Derby to Me!
1. A list of potential participants first and last names will speed up the registration process.
2. Ask people to show up 15 minutes before race time to start registering their cars. This will help start the race on time.
3. While cars do not have to be 5 ounces, the closer a car is to the maximum weight, the faster that car will be. We encourage adding weight before race day. Many places that sell cars will also sell a variety of weights. Coins, washers, & screws can also work in a pinch. Severely underweight cars are usually the ones we see struggling to finish.
4. Graphite! Graphite! Graphite! Yes, it's messy, but it's also key to having a car perform well. We've seen cars that barely make it down the track add a little graphite and be crazy fast. Add a little graphite, spin the wheels, and you're good to go. More is not necessarily better, a little goes a long ways.
5. Absolutely nothing liquid will be allowed on or near the track! Super glue, Pledge, WD-40, etc... must be completely dry if you're trying to use it. If it is still wet, we absolutely WILL NOT allow your car to run!
6. Set up a table with some extra weights, glue, tape, and graphite for those racers who need a little last minute help. Ask one of the leaders to be in charge of the 'pit lane'. Do the graphite over a garbage can!
7. The car must have 3/8 inch clearance underneath the body so it does not rub on the track. Generally speaking, one layer of weights (coins, etc...) is fine. Any more and you may run into clearance issues.
8. If you want to do design (best paint, etc...) type awards, the event will flow best by having them done before the race ends. Assign a leader to be there during registration and begin assigning those awards.
9. Have fun!!! It's a pinewood derby after all!
